December 12, (THEWILL) – Tragedy struck in Maiduguri on Tuesday when a jubilant group of graduating students from Borno State University was involved in a fatal accident along the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway. The crash claimed three lives and left over 25 others injured.
The incident occurred at around 5:15 p.m. in the Moranti suburb, where a coaster bus carrying the students collided with a Dangote truck.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the students were in a celebratory mood when the unfortunate accident happened.
One witness said, “Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un.* At least three persons died, and 27 others were injured when a bus carrying students celebrating their graduation collided with a Dangote truck.”
The injured victims were immediately rushed to Umaru Shehu Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for urgent medical attention.
Confirming the incident, the Vice President of the National Union of Borno State Students, Ali Mallam Gana, said two students had been confirmed dead, while 23 others sustained injuries. He added that three of the injured students were in critical condition.
“As we speak, the Commissioner for Education and the Vice Chancellor of BOSU are at UMTH, where medical teams are attending to the injured students,” Gana said.
