December 12, (THEWILL) – President Bola Tinubu has reiterated that the interest and welfare of citizens in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger remain a top priority for the Economic Community of West African States emphasising that wisdom and diplomacy will guide the reintegration of the three countries into the regional bloc.
Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday during a State Visit by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Tinubu, who also chairs ECOWAS, noted that the leadership of the three countries had been reluctant to present clear transition programs for the restoration of democratic governance.
He said, “Our relationship of mutual respect will continue as we reappraise the situation in the three countries.
“What I can assure is that we will not tolerate unconstitutional governments.
“We will continue to lead by example. There are innocent citizens who have become victims of the military regimes.
“We will persist in using diplomatic channels to navigate this challenge without punishing the people. Free movement and trade will remain allowed. While the transition programs are uncertain, we will not penalize innocent citizens who do not hold power.”
Tinubu assured the German President that ECOWAS remains committed to restoring democracy in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso while keeping the door open for dialogue and collaboration.
He stated, “This is what ECOWAS will stand for.
“Regardless of the challenges in these countries, we are focused on the well-being of their citizens. As ECOWAS Chairman, I will not personalize issues but will ensure that we maintain an avenue for cooperation.”
In his response, President Steinmeier underscored the significance of reintegrating the three countries into the ECOWAS fold, noting its implications for the region’s economy and security.
“We discussed both bilateral and regional issues. I also met with the President of the ECOWAS Commission and understand the critical role of regional cooperation. As part of the European Union, we recognize the need for unity,” Steinmeier said.
He added, “For Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, the economic and security consequences of isolation are severe. We understand why ECOWAS security members are prioritizing diplomacy, but this is a challenging task that requires skilled negotiation to maintain regional stability.
“While employing diplomacy to encourage these countries to reconsider their position, it is crucial to have emergency plans in place for future economic cooperation.
