February 06, (THEWILL) — At least 31 people were killed and more than 160 others injured on Friday, February 6, 2026, following a suicide blast at a Shia worship centre in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital.
Authorities confirmed that the explosion occurred at the Tarlai Imambargah, also known as the Khadijatul Kubra mosque, in the Shehzad Town area during Friday prayers.
According to security sources, a suicide bomber detonated his explosives at the entrance of the facility after being confronted by guards, a move that likely prevented the attacker from reaching the main prayer hall where hundreds were gathered.
Television footage and images circulating on social media showed scenes of devastation, with the force of the blast shattering windows of the three-story mosque and damaging nearby buildings.
Police officers, rescue workers, and local residents were seen evacuating the wounded and transporting them to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and other nearby facilities, where an emergency has been declared.
Pakistan’s Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, described the bombing as a “cowardly act” in a post on X, while Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi directed authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for the survivors.
Senate opposition leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas also condemned the attack, calling it a serious failure of security and stressing that assaults on places of worship cannot be tolerated.
While no group has formally claimed responsibility, police sources suggest the attacker may have had links to “Fitna al-Khawarij,” a term the Pakistani government uses for the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
The incident notably occurred during a high-profile state visit by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to the capital.
The blast marks the second major suicide attack in Islamabad in recent months, following a bombing outside a court complex in November 2025 that killed 12 people.
It also comes amid a surge in militant violence across Pakistan, including recent coordinated attacks in the Balochistan province.
Security has been tightened across the federal capital as forensic teams and law enforcement agencies continue their investigations at the site.
