July 24, (THEWILL) — An An-24 passenger plane carrying nearly 50 people has crashed near the town of Tynda in the eastern part of Russia’s Amur region on Thursday morning.
According to preliminary reports from emergency services, there are no survivors.
Authorities suspect that crew error during landing in poor visibility conditions may have caused the crash.
“Fifteen kilometres from Tynda, the wreckage of an An-24 was found on a slope. The plane was destroyed,” Russia’s Emergency Ministry said in a statement.
The aircraft, operated by Angara Airlines, a Siberia-based carrier, departed from Khabarovsk at 7:36 a.m. local time (12:36 a.m. Moscow time), according to the airport’s press service.
However, communication with the aircraft was lost as it approached its destination in Tynda.
Regional governor Vasily Orlov confirmed via Telegram that the aircraft had 43 passengers on board, including five children, along with six crew members.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing at the crash site.
