July 07, (THEWILL) — Relief has enveloped the University of Ibadan (UI) community following the release of Miss Abolarin Tomisin, the 300-level Law student who was abducted in June alongside other travellers while returning from a national Scripture Union conference in Imo State.
The Students’ Union of the University, confirmed the development in a statement issued by its President, Temidayo Adeboye, who disclosed that the student’s release had also been confirmed by relevant authorities and representatives of the organisation involved.
Adeboye said Tomisin and the other freed victims were currently undergoing post-release procedures before proceeding to their respective destinations.
“We have been assured that our student will safely return to the university community soon,” he said.
Tomisin, who serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship and Vice-President of the fellowship’s University of Ibadan chapter, was abducted in June while returning from the organisation’s national conference held at the Camp of Faith, Okigwe, Imo State.
She was travelling with the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Uwem Cosmos, and other conference participants when gunmen kidnapped the group, triggering widespread concern within the university community and beyond.
The incident prompted sustained appeals for her safe release, while the UI Students’ Union kept students and the public updated on developments surrounding the abduction.
Adeboye had earlier debunked reports on social media claiming that several UI students were among the victims, clarifying that Tomisin was the only student of the university involved.
Reacting to the development, the Students’ Union president expressed appreciation to the security agencies, the University of Ibadan management, the leadership of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, and all individuals whose efforts contributed to securing the victims’ freedom.
He also thanked members of the university community for their prayers, patience, solidarity and support throughout the period of Tomisin’s captivity.
“As we celebrate this welcome news, we remain grateful to God and pray for the complete healing, restoration and well-being of everyone affected,” the statement said.
