June 16, (THEWILL) — In a development that could reshape the political landscape in Adamawa State ahead of the 2027 elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has recorded a sweeping victory in the state’s local government elections, winning all 21 chairmanship seats and all 226 councillorship positions despite the recent defection of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The outcome is being seen by political observers as a major statement of the PDP’s enduring grassroots strength in Adamawa, even after losing one of its most prominent political figures in the state to the ruling APC.
The chairman of the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC), Mohammed Umar, announced the results on Monday at the commission’s headquarters in Yola after the completion of the final collation process.
Declaring the results, Umar said the PDP emerged victorious across all 21 local government areas and secured every councillorship seat contested in the election held on Saturday.
“Following the final collation of results, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won all the 21 chairmanship seats contested in the state. The party also won all the 226 councillorship seats across the wards, while the election was conducted peacefully”, he stated.
According to him, the elections were successfully conducted across the state’s 226 wards, with the announcement made in the presence of security personnel, election observers, political party representatives and commissioners of the electoral body.
Umar disclosed that although 11 political parties initially signified interest in participating in the election, only four eventually contested.
The parties that participated included the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Umar commended residents of Adamawa State for their peaceful conduct and support throughout the electoral exercise, noting that the polls were largely orderly and successful. He also praised security agencies, election officials and other stakeholders for ensuring a smooth process without major incidents.
