December 20, (THEWILL) — Professor Daniel Nwachukwu has emerged as the fourth substantive Vice-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AEFUNAI), Ebonyi State, pledging to drive infrastructural development, academic innovation and enhanced global visibility for the institution.
Speaking after the selection exercise on Saturday in Abakaliki, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Engr. Dr Anthony Nnebo, said the appointment followed a transparent, merit-based process conducted in line with extant regulations.
Nnebo disclosed that eight candidates were shortlisted after the initial screening, while seven participated in the final interview.
He noted that the council’s decision was guided by competence, integrity and the collective interest of the university.
“We came here to work and to help people. Together with staff and management, we shall transform this university. With the cooperation of staff and stakeholders, the difference will be evident before the end of my tenure”, he said.
Professor Nwachukwu, an indigene of Okposi in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was until his appointment a Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where he served for 26 years in various academic and administrative capacities.
Expressing gratitude to God and the university community, the new Vice-Chancellor described his appointment as a new beginning for AEFUNAI.
“My appointment marks a new dawn. I promise to justify the confidence reposed in me by working tirelessly with the council, staff and students to transform AEFUNAI into a hub of academic and intellectual excellence”, he said.
Nwachukwu identified inadequate infrastructure, low student population and funding challenges as key priorities of his administration, noting that addressing these gaps would enhance enrolment, visibility and institutional competitiveness.
“You cannot have students without infrastructure. We must also strengthen engagement with host communities, diversify revenue sources and reposition the university for sustainable growth”, he stated.
He further revealed plans to partner with the private sector to fast-track infrastructure development and boost internally generated revenue, while sustaining collaboration with the media to improve the institution’s public image.
In his acceptance speech, Nwachukwu pledged to uphold ethical standards, promote academic excellence and pursue global competitiveness, dedicating the achievement to his family and supporters.
He also extended a hand of fellowship to fellow contestants, calling for unity and collective effort to move the university forward.
Also speaking, Prof. Paul Ezeonu, a distinguished academic and researcher, advised the new Vice-Chancellor to remain focused, shun distractions and carry all stakeholders along.
“Leadership is challenging. Ignore distractions, listen to all sides, respect the council and build on the foundations laid by your predecessors”, he advised.
Ezeonu and other speakers expressed confidence that the emergence of Professor Nwachukwu as the fourth Vice-Chancellor would strengthen stability and accelerate development at AEFUNAI as the institution strives for greater academic prominence.
