
September 27, (THEWILL) – Residents of Uyo metropolis, Akwa Ibom State Capital have sent a Save Our Soul to the state Government as floods arising from torrential rainfall submerged major streets in the city.
Affected areas from last weekend’s heavy downpour include : Idoro road by Julius Berger junction, Atiku Abubakar way, Ikot Oku Ikono, Edet Akpan Avenue, Udo Umanah among other major streets of the Metropolis.
Speaking to THEWILL in uyo on Monday, one of the victims identified as Mr Udimisor who is a landlord in one of the adjoining street by Stadium road closed to Julius Berger junction said during the heavy downpour last Saturday his compound was submerged while all the rooms in the building were flooded.
“I have lived in this compound for the last five years and I have not experienced this kind of flood before. The rain started at 9 am and lasted for over seven hours. The entrance to my compound turned to a river as nobody could either come in or move out . we were trapped for hours”

Another neighbour Mr Ifiok Elijah Ezekiel Udo said the same water damaged the fence in his compound and collapsed the soak away pit .
“The water came in at a speed and collapsed the fence in my backyard. Now I need more than N200,000 to restore the fence and fix the soakaway system ” he said
Residents of Udo Umanah and other streets within the area had similar experiences as the entrance of the summit complex hotel and the surroundings were completely submerged .
In a telephone interview, the state commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources Mr Charles Udoh said Drainage controlled projects are ongoing in the state but the spots mentioned are not included .
“I am not informed of this axis being ravaged by flood. Once I have an official report from them , the government will act accordingly” he stated.
