August 05, (THEWILL) — The leadership of the Nigerian Police Force, Zone 4, has promised to work in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists’, Benue State Council, to tame the tide of criminality within the zone.
The Assistant Inspector General in charge of the zone, Mr Zakari Echanya, who made a pledge while playing host to the leadership of the union at the zone 4 headquarters in Makurdi on Tuesday, noted the critical role the media plays in curbing crime in society through the dissemination of correct information to the public.
“The media play a vital role in the democratisation of the country as the fourth estate of the realm. Anyone or group that distances self from the media has something to hide, as a clear conscience fears no accusation”, he stated.
He charged members of the union to be professional in the course of duty as the country draws closer to the electioneering period, promising an open-door policy for the law-abiding citizens to do their legitimate businesses.
Earlier, the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ Benue State Council, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, acknowledged the good work being done within the Zone under AIG to tame criminality.
He charged the AIG to step up surveillance to nip criminality in the bud, as the country marches towards the general election in 2027 and to protect media practitioners in the course of performing their constitutional role of holding public office holders accountable.
Comrade Ugber also promised adequate publicity for the police activities and called for the dismantling of illegal checkpoints within the zone made up of Benue, Nasarawa and Taraba states.
