Airtel Expands Network To Strengthen Nigeria’s Digital Infrastructure

Airtel

February 03, (THEWILL) — Airtel Nigeria has unveiled plans to significantly enhance the country’s digital infrastructure, aiming to expand network capacity, support faster internet speeds, and improve connectivity across urban and rural areas. The initiative comes at a critical moment as demand for mobile data continues to surge nationwide.

According to recent industry statistics, Nigeria’s broadband penetration recently crossed the 50% mark, reaching around 50.58% by November 2025, up from about 45.6% at the start of the year, though still short of the national target of 70%.

The growth in broadband access has been accompanied by a sharp rise in internet usage with Nigerians consuming an estimated over 1.24 million terabytes of data in November 2025 reflecting rapidly increasing digital activity across sectors.

Airtel, which holds a substantial share of the market, follows industry peers in investing heavily in network expansion. The company reported robust growth in data consumption on its network, with average monthly data usage per customer rising to about 9.3 GB, compared with 7.3 GB previously, and smartphone penetration on its network climbing to just over 51%.

Industry figures also show that 4G remains the dominant mobile technology in Nigeria, while 5G adoption is gradually increasing albeit from a low base (with around 3% of connections using 5G as of mid-2025).

Airtel’s planned infrastructure upgrades are expected to support these trends by enhancing capacity, reducing network congestion, and paving the way for broader adoption of next-generation services such as 5G, which remains at an early stage nationally.

Analysts say these investments are crucial not only for consumer and business connectivity but also for enabling digital services in fintech, e-commerce, education, and remote work sectors that increasingly rely on stable and high-speed internet access.
