February 03, (THEWILL) — The Federal Government has formally handed over the headquarters building of the Africa Energy Bank (AEB) in Abuja, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the institution commences operations by June.
The handover marks a significant milestone in the establishment of the continent-backed financial institution, which is expected to provide funding support for energy projects across Africa, particularly in the oil, gas and energy transition space.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, government officials said Nigeria’s support for the Africa Energy Bank underscores its leadership role in Africa’s energy sector and its resolve to address the continent’s persistent energy financing gap.
The Africa Energy Bank, an initiative of African energy stakeholders, was conceived to mobilise capital for energy development at a time when global financing for fossil fuel projects has become increasingly constrained.
Nigeria’s backing of the June take-off date is expected to accelerate operational readiness, including staffing, governance structures and engagement with prospective investors and member countries.
Stakeholders noted that the operationalisation of the bank would enhance access to long-term financing for critical energy infrastructure, support industrial growth and drive economic development across the continent.
Analysts say hosting the bank’s headquarters positions Nigeria as a strategic hub for energy financing in Africa and could further strengthen its influence in shaping the continent’s energy future
