November 03, (THEWILL) — Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed a viral social media post falsely linking him to a disparaging comment against United States President, Donald Trump, describing the publication as “malicious propaganda, entirely fabricated and intended to mislead the public”.
Akpabio, in a press statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, condemned the false claim, warning that it was deliberately designed to incite diplomatic tension between Nigeria and the United States, as well as sow discord between him and Trump.
The fake message, which circulated widely online, alleged that Akpabio dismissed Trump’s remarks on insecurity in Nigeria and quoted him as saying: “The killing is taking place in Nigeria not in USA. Trump should focus on US. Nigerians are not complaining about the killings…”
Eyiboh said the post was a “calculated attempt to misinform the public and malign the character of the President of the Senate,” stressing that Akpabio never made such a statement in any context.
He also faulted the use of an unrelated photograph of Akpabio taken at a public event, noting that the perpetrators sought to lend false credibility to their fabrication.
“The Senate President holds President Trump in high regard as a historic political figure and leader of a great nation. He would never issue such a reckless and insensitive comment on the internal affairs of the United States or any friendly country”, the statement said.
Eyiboh reaffirmed Akpabio’s commitment to strengthening international alliances and advancing Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements, warning that irresponsible misinformation could undermine the nation’s foreign relations.
He urged Nigerians to disregard the viral post and rely only on accurate information issued through verified official channels, calling on the public and the media to remain vigilant against politically-motivated disinformation.
“The Office of the President of the Senate remains focused on constructive engagement, national unity and responsible communication”, Eyiboh added.
Akpabio’s office maintained that it will continue to promote truthful public communication while addressing attempts to tarnish the Senate President’s reputation or strain Nigeria’s diplomatic posture.
