March 16, (THEWILL) — The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed that the Akure Airport remains secure and that no bandits were arrested at the facility, while announcing the arrest of two suspects believed to be logistics suppliers aiding kidnapping activities in the state.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, made the clarification in a statement issued on Monday, dismissing earlier claims that four bandits were apprehended at the airport on Sunday.
Earlier, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), through its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, had issued a statement alleging that four bandits were arrested at the airport.
However, Jimoh described the report as false, stressing that there was no security breach at the airport.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Command wishes to state clearly that no such incident occurred at the Akure Airport, and there was no security breach of any kind at the facility,” he said,
He added that the command had instead received credible intelligence from a concerned citizen about suspected kidnappers operating around the Eleyewo axis of Akure.
Following the tip-off, police operatives launched a targeted operation in the area, leading to the arrest of two suspects believed to be providing logistical support to kidnapping syndicates within the state.
Jimoh added that the suspects have made useful confessional statements that are currently aiding ongoing investigations and efforts to track down other members of the criminal network.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, while urging members of the public to continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies in the fight against crime.
