
December 09, (THEWILL) – Workers at the Victor Attah International Airport in Akwa Ibom State have honoured Governor Umo Eno for his significant contributions to the aviation sector in the state and across Nigeria.
The recognition was part of activities commemorating the 2024 International Civil Aviation Day held at the airport over the weekend.
The event featured a fitness walk, cultural performances, and an award ceremony highlighting the achievements of Governor Eno’s administration in advancing the aviation industry.
Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. KufreAbasi Edidem, who attended as the special guest of honour, lauded Eno for prioritising aviation as a critical driver of economic growth, tourism, and regional integration.
“The aviation sector is pivotal to the state’s development, and Governor Eno’s leadership has elevated it to new heights,” Edidem said.
The Chairman of Ibom Airport Development Company, Dr. Iniong Essien, praised the dedication of airport workers, attributing the successes recorded in the aviation sector to their commitment and the governor’s unwavering support.
Essien expressed gratitude for the safe working environment at the airport and the investments made by the state government in ensuring a secure aviation landscape for both workers and passengers.
Comrade Sunny James, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress Akwa Ibom Chapter, joined other labour leaders to commend Governor Eno for enhancing airport facilities and safety measures, as well as increasing flight frequencies to boost the airport’s status as one of the best in the country.
Chairman of the National Union of Air Transport Employees at Victor Attah International Airport, Mr. Ukeme Utuk, also acknowledged the governor’s directive for a review of workers’ conditions of service.
Utuk emphasised the importance of modernizing airport equipment nationwide to ensure efficient operations and improved passenger satisfaction.
He further advocated for better remuneration for workers, which he said would drive growth and create a more productive work environment.
The 2024 International Civil Aviation Day celebration underscored the role of aviation in promoting safety, security, and sustainability within the global economy.
The event was a testament to Akwa Ibom’s strides in aviation development under Governor Eno’s leadership, reaffirming the state’s commitment to excellence in the sector.
