October 06, (THEWILL) — Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has approved a ₦27,000 increase in the monthly pensions of retirees in the state public service.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Office of the Head of Civil Service and signed by the Head of Civil Service, Elder Effiong Essien.
According to the statement, the increment follows the implementation of the new ₦80,000 minimum wage and the completion of a pensioners’ verification exercise in the state.
The new rate takes effect from September 1, 2025, and applies to all pensioners in the Akwa Ibom State Public Service.
The release recalled that Governor Eno had earlier approved a flat-rate increase of ₦15,000 for pensioners who retired between 2007 and 2011, and ₦20,000 for those who retired before 2007, effective from April 1, 2024.
It added that the state government has also been releasing funds monthly to offset the over ₦90 billion gratuity backlog inherited by the present administration.
Elder Essien noted that the new increment underscores Governor Eno’s continued commitment to the welfare and well-being of pensioners across the state.
“These approvals by His Excellency demonstrate his administration’s resolve to improve the welfare of pensioners in the entire Akwa Ibom State Public Service,” the statement added.
