July 09, (THEWILL) — The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced plans to host a Capacity Building Workshop on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) for Local Government Stakeholders and the general public.
According to the State Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, the Workshop will focus on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), as part of ongoing efforts to implement the State Water Law as approved in December 2022, especially at the grassroots.
The State commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, Dr. Ubuo Ubuo, who bared the minds of the State Government to journalists in Uyo, said the strategic initiative follows the recent approval of the WASH Policy Framework and Open Defecation Free (ODF) Road Map, to reinforce the state’s commitment to sustainable public health and environmental goals.
He says a two-day workshop with the theme: “WASH Sector: Strengthening the LGAs Towards Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” has been scheduled for Thursday, July 10 – Friday, July 11, 2025, at Amunice Event Centre, Aka Itiam Road, Uyo
“The workshop aims to empower local government leaders to establish and operationalise functional WASH Departments across all 31 local government areas of the state”, he explained.
Participants expected in the two-day event, according to him, include:
executive chairmen of the 31 Local Government Councils, heads of Local Government administration (HLGAs), designated WASH Focal Persons, among others.
The commissioner, however, emphasised that the initiative is a vital part of the state’s broader agenda to improve water supply, sanitation, and hygiene services at the grassroots level, contributing significantly to the realisation of the SDGs, particularly Goal 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation.
“The state government remains fully committed to equipping all LGAs with strong institutional frameworks to deliver essential WASH services that promote public health and sustainable development”, the Commissioner stressed.
He called on relevant stakeholders to participate actively and collaborate in the transformative initiative for a healthier, more resilient and clean Akwa Ibom.
