The Executive Chairman of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Hon. Aniefiok Nkom

April 17, (THEWILL) — The Executive Chairman of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Hon. Aniefiok Nkom, has unveiled an investment-driven agenda to reposition the council as a major economic and cultural hub, using its 75th anniversary as a launchpad.

At a world press briefing held at the council secretariat on Thursday, Nkom announced that the Diamond Jubilee celebration would run through 2026, focusing on attracting investors, strengthening infrastructure, and restoring traditional institutions.

Central to the plan is the construction and commissioning of a new shopping mall scheduled for December 2026. The project, according to the chairman, is designed to boost commercial activity in Ikot Ekpene, popularly known as the “Raffia City”, while creating opportunities for local businesses and external investors.

Nkom also disclosed plans for a large-scale exhibition of indigenous products, particularly raffia-based crafts, to showcase the area’s economic potential to both local and international audiences.

In a significant cultural move, he announced that a paramount ruler would be crowned and installed in August 2026, describing it as a step toward restoring traditional authority and reinforcing the community’s heritage.

The council boss said the Jubilee would serve as a coordinated platform to engage investors, the private sector, and the diaspora in a long-term development framework for the area.

He emphasised that the anniversary would go beyond celebration, stressing the need for measurable outcomes in economic growth and community development.

“The celebration must translate into tangible progress”, Nkom said, noting that the initiative marks a deliberate shift toward sustained development.

He mentioned that Ikot Ekpene, historically known for its raffia craftsmanship and commercial significance, is seeking to leverage its legacy to enhance its visibility and competitiveness in Nigeria’s evolving economic landscape.
