June 30 (THEWILL) — The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a suspect over allegations of criminal defamation and cyberstalking following a petition filed by former Senator Effiong Bob, while warning that social media will not be used as a haven for criminal activities.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the petition, dated June 17, 2026, was submitted on behalf of the former senator by Samuel Ikpo & Company Chambers.
The petition accused Mr. Ewa Okpo of publishing and circulating videos and other materials on social media allegedly containing false, malicious, and defamatory statements capable of damaging the reputation and integrity of the petitioner.
The command said it immediately commenced investigations upon receiving the petition, leading to the arrest of the suspect, who is currently in police custody and assisting investigators.
The police stressed that while the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, such rights do not extend to the dissemination of false information, cyberstalking, criminal defamation, cyberbullying, blackmail, or other unlawful activities carried out through digital platforms.
“The social media space is not a sanctuary for criminality,” the statement said.
It warned individuals against using anonymous accounts or mobile devices to spread falsehoods, incite hatred, or destroy the reputations of others.
The command further cautioned that persons who knowingly repost, endorse, or amplify false and malicious online publications could also face criminal liability if investigations establish their involvement.
It maintained that the investigation is being conducted professionally, impartially, and in accordance with the Constitution and other extant laws, with the rights of all parties being respected throughout the process.
The police added that anyone found culpable at the conclusion of the investigation would be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction.
The command also urged members of the public to exercise responsibility, civility, and restraint in their use of social media, noting that every publication should be guided by truth, decency, and respect for the rights and dignity of others.
