June 30 (THEWILL) — Akwa Ibom State has taken a significant step towards overhauling its public transportation system with the arrival of the first batch of 20 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses ordered by Governor Umo Eno’s administration.

Governor Eno, while receiving and inspecting the buses, described the delivery as a major milestone in his administration’s efforts to provide safer, more affordable and efficient transportation services across the state’s 31 local government areas.

The Governor disclosed that the 20 buses represent the first tranche of a 50-bus fleet procured by the government to modernise public transport and improve mobility for residents.

He said the next phase of the project would focus on completing bus terminal facilities, installing vehicle-tracking systems and introducing a modern electronic ticketing platform to ensure efficient operations and accountability.

Governor Eno commended the Ministry of Transport, the contractor, the military and other stakeholders for ensuring the successful delivery of the vehicles.

According to him, the initiative is in line with his administration’s commitment to simplifying transportation for the people while leveraging the state’s expanding road infrastructure.

“This is another clear indication that our vision for a modern and efficient transportation system is gradually becoming a reality. Development requires careful planning, patience and consistent execution, and we are beginning to see the results of those efforts”, the Governor said.

He described the buses as part of a broader infrastructure drive aimed at improving public services and enhancing the quality of life of Akwa Ibom residents.

The Commissioner for Transport, Dr Anthony Luke, praised Governor Eno for what he described as his visionary leadership and commitment to repositioning the state’s transport sector.

Luke said the arrival of the buses demonstrates the Governor’s determination to make life easier for the people through strategic investments in critical infrastructure.

Present at the ceremony were the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah; the Executive Assistant and Chief Delivery Adviser to the Governor, Mr Aniefiok Johnson; the Managing Director of Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation (AKICORP), Mr Imo-Abasi Jacob; the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Entrepreneurial Development, Mr Ime Uwah; and other government officials.
