July 20, (THEWILL) — The Akwa Ibom State Government’s plan to establish a modern, cleaner, and more affordable public transportation system has recorded another milestone as the government takes delivery of a second batch of 10 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, bringing the total number delivered to 30.
The latest delivery followed the arrival of the first 20 CNG buses on June 29, 2026, and moved the state closer to its target of deploying a 50-bus fleet under Governor Umo Eno’s transport reform initiative.
Reacting to the development in a statement issued on Sunday, the Acting Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Media Network (APCMN), Comrade Uwem Bassey, described the arrival of the additional buses as evidence that Governor Eno is fulfilling his commitment to transform public transportation in the state.
According to the statement, the project extends beyond the procurement of buses and is designed to establish a comprehensive public transport system that is safe, affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly.
The APCMN noted that the transport initiative also includes the construction of a central bus terminal, the development of sub-terminals across the 31 local government areas, the introduction of a cashless e-ticketing system, and the operationalisation of the Ibom Urban Transport Company.
It stated that, when fully operational, the transport system is expected to lower commuting costs for workers, students, and traders, create employment opportunities, encourage the adoption of cleaner energy, and improve mobility across the state.
The group commended Governor Eno for what it described as his consistency in implementing projects promised to the people, expressing confidence that the remaining 20 buses would be delivered as scheduled.
The APCMN congratulated the governor and residents of the state on the latest milestone and urged continued public support for programmes aimed at improving transportation infrastructure and economic development.
