December 18, (THEWILL) — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for an immediate investigation into an alleged discrepancy between the Tax Act passed by the National Assembly and the version later gazetted, warning that the development could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s legislative process.
In a statement signed on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the opposition party said a member of the House of Representatives, Abdussamad Dasuki, had drawn attention to apparent differences between the law approved by lawmakers and the gazetted copy.
The PDP urged the leadership of the House of Representatives to treat the matter with utmost seriousness and ensure a thorough investigation, stressing that any insertion, omission or substitution of provisions not approved by the legislature would amount to a grave breach of legislative procedure.
According to the party, failure to address the issue could erode public trust in the country’s lawmaking process, as Nigerians must be assured that the laws they are required to obey accurately reflect the decisions of their elected representatives.
The party further demanded that the commencement date of the Tax Act be shifted from January 1, 2026, by at least six months.
It said the extension would provide ample time for a comprehensive investigation, the publication and circulation of the authentic enacted version of the law, and adequate public sensitisation on its provisions.
Commending Dasuki for what it described as diligence and courage in the discharge of his legislative duties, the PDP said transparency and accountability must be upheld to safeguard the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The statement also reiterated the party’s call on the Federal Government to prioritise good governance and institutional integrity, noting that protecting the sanctity of the lawmaking process is critical to sustaining public confidence and democratic stability in the country.
