May 9, (THEWILL) – The recent approval and release by the Federal Government of 102,000 tonnes of palliatives to counter the effect of hardship in the country has sparked widespread debate and concerns among Nigerians, as Amb. Tofunmi Ogunronbi has advocated for sustainable solutions to the Nation’s food security.
According to him, while the gesture may seem like a step in the right direction, he argued that it falls short of addressing the underlying issues plaguing our nation’s food security and economic stability.
“At the heart of the matter lies a fundamental question: Are palliatives the solution to Nigeria’s deep-rooted food insecurity problem? Merely distributing short-term relief measures will not address the systemic challenges that leave millions of Nigerians vulnerable to hunger and poverty.”
Amb. Dr Ogunronbi, who is the Managing Director/CEO of Imperial Glamour Nigeria LTD, a Management Consulting Firm, said providing temporary relief may alleviate immediate suffering, but it does little to address the root causes of food insecurity.
“Moreover, there are legitimate concerns about the equitable distribution of these palliatives, with fears that they may fall into the wrong hands due to political interference and corruption.”
“Instead of relying on band-aid solutions, what Nigeria truly needs is a comprehensive strategy to invest in food security and sustainable development. This entails prioritising investments in agriculture, infrastructure, and education to empower communities and build resilience against future crises.”
