April 02, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu has called for an urgent return to peace and stability in Jos, urging residents, traditional leaders, and local authorities to restore the harmony the city was once celebrated for.
The President made the appeal on Thursday during a high-level engagement with stakeholders in Plateau State, following recent attacks in Ungwan Rukuba community.
THEWILL earlier reported that the Ungwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area came under attack on Sunday, leaving several people dead and many others injured. The incident has heightened concerns over security in the state, particularly the threat of violence spreading from rural to urban areas.
Addressing the tragedy, President Tinubu expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families, stressing that no amount of mourning could bring back those who lost their lives. He urged leaders at all levels to prioritise peace, dialogue, and prosperity over actions that foster violence and suffering.
“This is not just a call for condolences, it is a call for urgent action to prevent recurrence and to restore the sense of security our people deserve. We cannot allow such attacks to become a pattern”, he said.
As part of immediate measures, President Tinubu directed security chiefs to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of the attacks. He also revealed plans to strengthen surveillance across the state, announcing that over 5,000 CCTV cameras would be deployed to improve monitoring, enhance rapid response, and provide real-time intelligence for law enforcement agencies.
The President reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to restoring peace in Plateau State, ensuring accountability for violent acts, and supporting community-driven initiatives aimed at preventing future crises. He emphasised that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to guarantee that residents can live without fear while promoting economic and social development.
Former governor of Plateau State, Jonah David Jang, who was present at the engagement, attributed the spread of attacks from rural communities to urban centres to deliberate acts of sabotage. He reassured residents that Plateau remains a “home of peace and tourism” and called for continuous dialogue with traditional leaders, community stakeholders, and security agencies to find sustainable solutions.
Jang also highlighted the possibility that some actors may be attempting to destabilise the state ahead of future elections, but expressed confidence that such efforts would ultimately fail.
He urged communities to remain vigilant, reject divisive actions, and collaborate with authorities to maintain law and order.
