May 22, (THEWILL) – A member of the House of Representatives, Sunday Cyriacus Umeha, representing Ezeagu/Udi Federal Constituency of Enugu State, has defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Umeha’s defection was announced in a letter read on the floor of the House during Thursday’s plenary, presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
In the letter, Umeha cited the lingering leadership crisis within the Labour Party involving Senator Nenadi Usman, Barrister Julius Abure, and Alhaji Lamidi Apapa, all of whom continue to lay claim to the party’s national leadership, as the reason for his defection.
He said the protracted dispute had left members of the party confused and without direction.
However, Minority Leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, opposed the defection, noting that the Supreme Court had already resolved the LP leadership tussle.
He also decried the growing trend of defections and called for constitutional reforms to address the issue.
