March 05, (THEWILL) — The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has postponed the conduct of ward, local government and state congresses in Zamfara State until further notice.

The decision was conveyed in a formal notice dated March 2, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and sighted by THEWILL on Thursday.

In the letter signed by the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, and the party’s National Secretary, Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, the ruling party informed the electoral commission of the suspension of the congresses pending further directives.

According to the party, the postponement followed ongoing consultations and the need to conclude certain preparatory and administrative processes to ensure the orderly, transparent and credible conduct of the congresses in the state.

“The All Progressives Congress hereby formally notifies the Independent National Electoral Commission of the suspension of the Ward, Local Government and State Congresses of the party until further notice”, the letter stated.

According to the notice, the only process currently sanctioned by the party in Zamfara is the election of three-man delegates from each local government area of the state to participate in the party’s National Convention.

Party sources, however, indicated that the move may not be unconnected with ongoing political consultations involving the governor of the state, Dauda Lawal, who is reportedly considering defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

The sources said the postponement could allow the governor to conclude consultations and complete the planned defection, which may position him to assume leadership of the APC structure in the state before the congresses are eventually conducted.

The APC leadership in the letter assured INEC that a revised timetable for the congresses would be communicated in due course, in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 and the regulations and guidelines governing political parties.

The party expressed appreciation to the electoral commission for its cooperation and reiterated its commitment to conducting credible internal democratic processes.Zamfara State APC
