April 02, (THEWILL) — Argentina has designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation and expelled Iran’s top diplomat in Buenos Aires, in a decisive move that underscores its commitment to justice and national security.
The government also declared Iran’s Chargé d’Affaires, Mohsen Soltani Tehrani, persona non grata and ordered him to leave the country within 48 hours.
Officials said the designation places the IRGC on Argentina’s registry of terrorist-linked entities, enabling authorities to impose financial sanctions and restrict its operations within the country.
The move is rooted in Argentina’s long-standing investigations into the 1992 bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires and the 1994 attack on the AMIA Jewish community centre — incidents that together claimed over 100 lives and left hundreds injured.
Prosecutors in Argentina have consistently alleged that the attacks were carried out by Hezbollah with support from Iran, particularly through the IRGC and its external operations network. Tehran has repeatedly denied any involvement.
Under President Javier Milei, Argentina has adopted a more assertive posture on security and counterterrorism. The latest action follows an earlier decision to designate the IRGC’s Quds Force as a terrorist organisation, signalling a broader crackdown on groups linked to Iran.
Analysts say the expulsion of Iran’s envoy reflects Argentina’s growing alignment with the United States and Israel on Iran-related security issues, while reinforcing its determination to confront threats linked to past attacks on its soil.
Iran has yet to issue an official response to the diplomat’s expulsion. However, it previously condemned Argentina’s designation of the IRGC, warning it could damage bilateral relations and calling the move a “strategic mistake”.
