September 29, (THEWILL) — The Nigerian media industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a broadcast journalist with ARISE Television, who was killed during a robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, on Monday.
ARISE News, in a statement, expressed shock and grief over her passing, extending condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones. The station also called for a thorough investigation, urging the Nigeria Police to ensure the perpetrators are swiftly apprehended and prosecuted.
“It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of the ARISE News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu. Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident in her residence in Katampe area of Abuja”, ARISE confirmed in a statement.
Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie, was 29 years old. A lawyer by training, she had built a promising career as an anchor, reporter, and producer, earning admiration from colleagues for her energy, professionalism, and supportive spirit.
Her short but impactful career left an imprint on viewers and colleagues alike. Her voice, ARISE noted, “is now silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory.”
Police authorities have commenced investigations into the incident.
