January 15, (THEWILL) – Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has called on Nigerians to ensure the unity of the country remains intact as a true testament of appreciation for the military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Nigerian Civil War, which took place between 1967 and 1970.

Speaking at the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony on Wednesday at the Arcade Ground, Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Abiodun stated that maintaining the unity of the nation was the most profound way to honor the fallen heroes.

The Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed annually on January 15th, is dedicated to remembering and honoring the sacrifices of soldiers who died protecting the nation during the Civil War.

Abiodun urged Nigerians, particularly the people of Ogun State, to work tirelessly toward ensuring that the nation remains indivisible, despite the numerous challenges it faces.

He also appealed to citizens not to restrict their remembrance of the fallen heroes to just January 15th, but to carry the spirit of gratitude and appreciation throughout the year.

“It is a day for us to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who gave their lives to protect our nation, whether in external or internal conflicts,” Abiodun stated.

The governor further stressed the importance of showing continuous care and love to the families of the fallen soldiers.

He added, “We should not only remember them on this day but take time every day to recognize their sacrifices.

“These are individuals who did what many of us would not have volunteered to do. We must ensure their sacrifices were not in vain.”

Abiodun concluded by urging Nigerians to support efforts that foster national unity, stating that ensuring the country’s cohesion was another meaningful way to show respect and appreciation to the fallen heroes and their families.
