August 03, (THEWILL) — Arsenal’s pursuit of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães has hit an early obstacle after the Magpies rejected the Premier League champions’ opening offer for the Brazilian midfielder.
The London club has made Guimarães one of its priority targets this summer as manager Mikel Arteta looks to reinforce his midfield ahead of the new campaign.
Although the initial proposal has been turned down, discussions between the two clubs remain ongoing, with Arsenal considering whether to return with an improved bid.
Newcastle’s position has been clear throughout the transfer window.
The club wants to retain its captain, who still has two years remaining on his current contract, with an option to extend it by another year.
Despite the club’s stance, reports indicate Guimarães informed Newcastle officials last month of his desire to join Arsenal before the start of the new season.
The 28-year-old has now linked up with Newcastle’s squad at their pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain, after travelling from Brazil.
His arrival was reportedly planned in agreement with the club despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

Over the past four years, he has developed into one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders, making 195 appearances and scoring 31 goals while becoming club captain.

The transfer battle comes during a period of transition for Newcastle following the departure of manager Eddie Howe.
Shortly after Howe’s exit, Guimarães paid tribute to his former coach on social media, describing him as the “king of this club” and thanking him for helping him develop both as a player and as a person.

Guimarães is regarded as one of the league’s most complete midfielders, capable of operating as a defensive midfielder, central playmaker, or advanced attacking midfielder.
