April 29, (THEWILL) – Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Maiduguri branch, has rejected what they described as an illegal advertisement for the institution’s vice chancellor position.
The UNIMAID Chairperson of ASUU, Dr Abubakar Saidu, lamented in a briefing in Maiduguri on Monday.
“The recent advertisement for the Vice Chancellor position at the University of Maiduguri is highlighted as an example. It was authored by the Minister of Education, bypassing proper procedures, and raising doubts about the process’s fairness and legality.”
Dr Abubakar noted that the advertorial was placed in the absent of council, as part of the process of appointing a new Vice Chancellor, was not acceptable to the Union and its members because it contravened relevant laws.
“The University must refrain actions that would jeopardise the integrity of legal exercises, especially the call for interviews to recruit staff in the absence of the University council.
“We expresses concern that the government’s action threaten transparency, equity, and merit-based selection in choosing University leaders”, Dr Abubakar warned.
He, therefore, warned the intending applicants to steer clear until due process is adhered to on the recruitment of a new VC.
He urged all stakeholders to collaborate in protecting the autonomy and integrity of public Universities.
Our Correspondent report that the current management of the University, led by the vice chancellor, Prof Aliyu Shugaba, had recently placed an advertorial on the vacancy of the post of the vice-chancellor in a national daily by the UNIMAID’s Registrar.
