July 2 (THEWILL) — Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election, Atiku Abubakar, has appointed actor-turned-politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, as his spokesperson.
Okonkwo announced his appointment in a statement posted on his official X handle on Thursday, expressing gratitude to Atiku for the confidence reposed in him and describing the responsibility as an opportunity to contribute to the party’s vision ahead of the 2027 elections.
“I give God all the glory for being appointed by His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, as his spokesperson. I thank His Excellency for the immense confidence reposed in me”, he said.
The former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesman said Atiku’s decision reflected his leadership style, noting that the former vice president prefers dialogue and consensus-building to confrontation whenever concerns are raised by political associates. According to him, rather than taking offence at constructive criticism, Atiku engages stakeholders to find common ground and strengthen the party.
“Rather than take offence at associates for expressing genuine reservations about any action taken, His Excellency always opts for dialogue and compromise that engender solutions to problems”, Okonkwo stated.
He disclosed that discussions with Atiku and other senior members of the ADC centred on the political interests of the South-East, which, he said, were adequately addressed within the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the prevailing political realities.
“At a dialogue with His Excellency and other well-meaning members of the African Democratic Congress, the interests of the South-East were discussed and guaranteed within the existing challenges posed by the Electoral Act, 2026, and the realities on the ground”, he added.
Okonkwo also acknowledged the roles played by Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman, Ralphs Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Ekene Onwuka, in strengthening the party and fostering unity ahead of the next general election.
He further expressed appreciation to his family, supporters and friends for their encouragement and prayers, while asking for continued support as he assumes his new role.
“I still covet your prayers for wisdom, courage, provision and protection needed to carry out this challenging responsibility, which will usher in a glorious and great Nigeria”, he added.
The appointment comes weeks after Okonkwo openly criticised the party over reports that it was considering a vice-presidential candidate from the South-South, arguing that such a move would further deepen the political marginalisation of the South-East, which has not produced either Nigeria’s President or Vice President since 1999.
Following consultations within the party, the ADC eventually named former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as Atiku’s running mate after the former vice president secured the party’s presidential ticket.
