January 20, (THEWILL) — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for unity within the opposition coalition following a social media exchange involving his supporters and those of Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 General elections, who recently defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Atiku, in a post on X on Tuesday, cautioned against insults directed at either leader, warning that such internal divisions only serve the interests of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Anyone who insults Obi or Atiku do not mean well for the leaders, the Coalition ADC and for Nigeria and Nigerians. The only persons who benefit from such a civil war are the APC urban bandits who want to maintain the satanic status quo. We are better together!” Atiku wrote.
His comment was in response to an earlier post by political commentator Everest, who alleged that Atiku’s supporters were attacking Obi without allowing criticism of the former vice president.
“Atiku’s people want to insult Peter Obi without Atiku getting the heat back. Maybe they feel Atiku deserves respect and Peter Obi does not,” Everest had posted.
Observers say Atiku’s intervention was aimed at de-escalating tensions and reinforcing unity within the opposition bloc, particularly among figures aligned under the ADC-led coalition.
The development comes amid renewed efforts by opposition leaders to build a common front ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with Atiku’s conciliatory tone widely welcomed by Obi’s supporters.
