February 27, (THEWILL) – The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Waziri Atiku Abubakar, on Monday, recorded an overwhelming victory in Akwa Ibom State, in the just concluded election.
The PDP candidate scored a total of 214,012, followed by the APC candidate, Sen. Bola Tinubu, who scored 160,620 votes, while the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, came third with 132,683 votes.
Reading the final results at the INEC collection centre, Udo Udoma Avenue, the state collation officer and the Vice Chancellor of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State, Prof. Emmanuel Adigio, said that the total registered voters in the 31 LGAs of the state were 2,357,418.
He said the total accredited voters were 594,450, total valid votes recorded were 555,089, rejected votes were 32,328, and the total votes cast were 587,417.
Results of National Assembly elections also held on Saturday, February 25, in the state, show that PDP candidates, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey and Rt. Hon. Ekong Sampson, won in Uyo and Eket senatorial districts respectively, while APC candidate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, won in Ikot Ekpene senatorial district.
For the House of Representatives, out of the 10 seats in the state, PDP won seven, APC won two, and YPP won one.
Speaking after the presentation, the PDP state Agent, Engr. Uwem Okoko, expressed satisfaction with the results of the presidential election but called on INEC to ensure all discrepancies with the BVAS system are rectified before the gubernatorial election on March 11.
He, however, complained that a situation where most pooling units could not commence voting till late in the evening and collection extended to February 27, is not acceptable.
Our correspondent reports that apart from pockets of violence in a few units, which led to the cancellation of the exercise in such areas, elections in the state were relatively free, fair, credible and peaceful.
