December 12, (THEWILL) – The Labour Party governorship candidate in the recent Bayelsa State election, Engr. Udengs Eradiri, and his running mate, Commodore Benjamin Nathus (retd.), have announced their resignation from the party.
It was gathered that most of the party’s local government chairmen in Bayelsa also joined Eradiri and Nathus in leaving the party.
In a resignation letter addressed to the state chairman of the party in Yenagoa, dated December 8, Eradiri said his decision was to enable him to pursue his political aspirations on a platform better prepared to deliver the leadership Bayelsa deserves.
The letter, titled “Letter of Withdrawal as Labour Party Member”, expressed appreciation to party members who supported his vision for a better Bayelsa and gave him the opportunity to contest as the governorship candidate.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t scale through the intrigues and challenges implanted in the party leadership,” Eradiri lamented, noting that while the experience was enriching, it became evident that a new platform was necessary for his aspirations.
Eradiri, who came third in the governorship election, disclosed that his decision to leave was fully supported by his loyalists and announced ongoing consultations to determine his next political move.
“We are consulting seriously and engaging all stakeholders to decide the next political party to join. Our next party of interest will be one that enables us to serve the people and move Bayelsa forward,” he said.
Similarly, in his resignation letter, Nathus said he was leaving the Labour Party to seek a platform dedicated to providing transformative leadership for Bayelsa.
“I am profoundly grateful for the support of party members who shared in our vision for a thriving Bayelsa. The journey has been enriched with invaluable experiences, and I am honoured to have worked with dedicated colleagues and engaged deeply with communities,” he stated.
The mass resignation underscores the dissatisfaction of key stakeholders with the Labour Party’s leadership in Bayelsa State following the election.
