November 10, (THEWILL) — BBC Director-General Tim Davie and the corporation’s head of news, Deborah Turness, resigned on Sunday following mounting criticism over the broadcaster’s editing of a speech delivered by former United States President Donald Trump shortly before the January 6 Capitol riot.
The controversy adds to recent scrutiny of the BBC, which has faced pressure over its coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict and accusations of political bias.
In his resignation statement, Davie said the BBC must remain transparent and accountable, acknowledging that the ongoing debate over editorial standards contributed to his decision.
He stressed that the resignation was his own choice and said he was working with the BBC Board to ensure a smooth transition to a new director-general in the coming months.
Turness, in a separate letter to staff, said the dispute surrounding the Trump documentary had escalated to a point where it was causing reputational harm to the BBC.
She noted that while errors were made in the editing process, allegations of institutional bias within BBC News were unfounded.
The resignations follow a report published by The Daily Telegraph detailing a leaked internal document from a BBC standards adviser.
The memo criticised the Panorama programme for editing Trump’s January 6, 2021 speech in a manner that removed a line where he had urged his supporters to protest “peacefully,” while retaining parts that suggested a call to confrontational action.
According to the leaked assessment, the edit could be considered misleading, raising further questions about editorial judgment and impartiality within the broadcaster.
