BEVERLY HILLS, October 27, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has selected Benin’s stadium as host venue for next month’s 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Super Eagles qualifier against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone.
Ademola Olajire, NFF Assistant Director on Media, confirmed that the fixture will be played at the newly refurbished Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
THEWILL notes that the venue was renovated in preparation for the Edo 2020 National Sports Festival. However, the Festival had to be postponed in March by the Presidency as a measure against the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in the country through contact sports.
The stadium was first to acquire the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, a facility bought by the Edo State government as part of the preparations for a world class sports festival.
The match against the Leone Stars is slated for Friday, November 13 and the reverse fixture will be in Freetown, four days after.
The Gernot Rohr’s-coached Super Eagles last played at home at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo. That tie was a qualifier against the Squirrels of Benin Republic.
The last time the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium hosted a national team game was a goalless friendly match between the Super Eagles and the Zebras of Botswana on the 12th of November, 2011.
THEWILL hopes for a more favourable result from the Super Eagles this November against Sierra Leone.
