April 15, (THEWILL) – The Caretaker Committee Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Benue State, Dr. Benjamin Omale, has described the recent assassination attempt on the party’s Legal Adviser, Barr. Terhemba Ngbea, as politically motivated.
According to Omale, the incident occurred in Abuja’s Central Area, near Sahad Stores, where Ngbea had parked his vehicle.
He reportedly noticed a suspicious vehicle trailing him. Recognising a potential threat, Ngbea took evasive action and called for help, even as sporadic gunfire was directed at him.
In a statement issued in Makurdi on Monday, the APC Chairman alleged that the attackers exited their vehicle, forcefully broke into Ngbea’s Hilux, and stole a bag containing a newly purchased laptop and some documents.
“It is important to clarify that the documents taken were unrelated to ongoing tribunal cases. The attackers attempted to start the vehicle but were thwarted by the advanced security system installed in it,” Omale stated.
He further said the party had strong reasons to believe the attack was not a random act of violence, but a calculated attempt to either kidnap or eliminate Ngbea due to his prominent role in advancing the party’s interests at the tribunal.
Describing the attack as both “alarming and unacceptable,” Omale said steps had been taken to protect party members, especially those in critical positions.
He commended Ngbea’s composure and bravery during the incident and urged security agencies to thoroughly investigate the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“This is a time for heightened vigilance and unity. We must collectively defend our democratic institutions and those who serve them,” Omale added.
