August 24, (THEWILL) — The Benue House of Assembly has elected Hon. Alfred Emberga as the new Speaker, following the resignation of Rt. Honourable Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh from office on Sunday.
A motion to elect Hon. Emberga representing Makurdi North was moved by Douglas Akya of Makurdi South and was seconded by Abu Umoru of Apa state constituency.
The Deputy Speaker, Mrs Lami Danladi Ogenyi, who presided over Sunday’s plenary session, put it to a vote, and all members present accepted Emberga as the new Speaker.
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Emberga paid tribute to the former speaker Dajoh for his contribution to law-making in the state, and pledged to carry all members along in the course of legislative duty.
Earlier, Rt. Hon. Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh had announced his resignation from the position, citing the best interest of the state as the reason.
In a resignation letter dated 24th August, 2025, and addressed to the Clerk of the House, Hon. Dajoh announced his decision to step down as Speaker of the 10th Benue State House of Assembly with immediate effect.
According to the letter, the Speaker’s resignation was done in good faith and in the best interest of the state, appreciating his colleagues for giving him the opportunity to serve as first among equals.
He pledged to remain committed to his duties as a legislator and representative of Gboko West State Constituency.
This development marks a significant shift in the leadership of the Benue State legislature, and further details are expected to unfold in the coming days.
