August 18, (THEWILL) — Governor Hyacinth Alia has announced the total renovation of the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ secretariat, Makurdi, built over thirty years ago.
Flagging off the distribution of Terena palm seedlings tagged “Alia Palm trees” to members of the union at its secretariat in Makurdi on Monday, the governor also approved the release of N12 million for the Benue State Council to clear its outstanding dues owed to the national secretariat.
Speaking further, Governor Alia promised to look into the issue of weigh-in allowances for some state media workers yet to enjoy the facility as soon as a new Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism is appointed.
The governor reinstated his administration’s commitment to agriculture, noted that he is planting a seed of brighter Benue through Alia Palm trees to journalists, and urged Benue people to embrace the scheme.
According to him, in a few years, the palms will lead to the establishment of industries, thereby adding to the true status of Benue as the food basket of the nation.
He commended the Nigeria Union of Journalists for organising the forum, urging media men to be deeply involved in the tree planting to better their lot.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ Benue State Council, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, commended the visionary leadership under which Benue State is witnessing a remarkable transformation.
“From the fast-paced infrastructural development across urban and rural communities, to your firm stance on restoring security and dignity to displaced persons and vulnerable populations. Your administration has renewed hope across the state”, Ugber stated.
Comrade Ugber notes that he has, in no small measure, intervened in the health needs of Benue Journalists, including comrades, Paul Mandeun, Goddy Ikyereve and Godwin Akor.
“We must also recognise the digital revolution you have ignited within the state’s governance architecture. Through your efforts, Benue is gradually aligning with global standards in e-governance, digital records management, and information dissemination, a shift that empowers not only civil servants, but also media practitioners”, he said.
The NUJ chairman acknowledged the role played by the Technical Special Adviser on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, Chief Solomon Iorpev, and the Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, for bringing peace back to the council.
He pledged the cooperation of Benue Journalists to embark on balanced and development journalism in the state.
