March 01, (THEWILL) – Nigeria Union of Journalists Benue State Council has cautioned politicians against politicising security issues in the state to their advantage.
Arising from its monthly congress held at NUJ House Makurdi, members also condemned the attacks on the Kwande Local Government Area and other parts of the state.
The union called on the security apparatus in the state to ensure that kidnapped students of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, regain their freedom and urged school authorities and students to be alert on early warning signs.
In a communique signed by Comrade Simon Iorver, chairman of the drafting Committee, and Comrade Norbert Hwakaa, secretary, the union commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for the pace of development in the state, particularly in terms of infrastructure.
It said, henceforth, that Press conferences held at the union secretariat in Makurdi aim at providing enough security for her members and ensuring adequate publicity as enshrined in the culture of the profession.
The union called on the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED) to ensure an adequate supply of electricity to Makurdi, the state capital and its environs.
Congress in session played host to the Director General, Bureau for Special Projects and Infrastructure, Professor Gabriel Akpen, who informed members that Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration is ensuring equitable distribution of projects to the three senatorial districts in the state.
The Director General noted that significant achievements have been recorded by the administration, especially in the area of road construction, renovation of structures, prompt payment of salaries, and pension, among others, in less than two years in office.
Professor Akpen expressed the hope that on completion of eight years in office, Governor Alia would have reached all parts of the state with quality projects that Benue has never witnessed before and called for support.
He assured Journalists of the state of transparent running of the Bureau’s affairs as encapsulated in governor Alia’s working document and challenged journalists to be just and cooperative in the course of reportage for rural people to appreciate what the government is doing for the state.
Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, in his remarks, called on Governor Alia to list the NUJ secretariat as one of the special projects his administration will renovate in the course of the year.
