May 15, (THEWILL) — The Benue State Chapter chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Comrade Hembadoon Orsar, has been sworn in as the Chairman of the SWAN Electoral Committee (SWANECO), to conduct the national SWAN elections scheduled to hold in July, 2026.
Performing the ceremony via a virtual meeting of the SWAN Full Council on Thursday, the President of SWAN, Isaiah Benjamin, said Orsar was the first woman in the history of SWAN in Nigeria to hold such an exalted position in the electoral committee.
Benjamin stated, “Your choice is based on merit, and I urge you to be fair and transparent in discharging your duties and also carry every member along”, Isaiah declared.
He congratulated the SWANECO members on their well-deserved appointment, urging them not to betray the confidence reposed in them and be decisive using the SWAN constitution to arrive at decisions.
Responding on behalf of the members, Comrade Orsar assured that not only would they carry everyone along in the course of duty, but would also work within the ambit of the SWAN constitution.
“We want to thank the National Executives of the SWAN for finding us worthy of this rare opportunity to serve in this committee and on behalf of the seven-member committee, promised to do our work without fear or favour by conducting credible, free, fair and transparent elections”, she stated.
THEWILL recalls that Orsar was elected as the chairman of the Benue State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in 2024, being the first woman in North Central Nigeria to hold that position in SWAN, since Benue State was created in 1976.
Reacting to the development, former chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ Benue State Council, Comrade Kajo Martins, commended the SWAN national secretariat for the confidence reposed in Comrade Orsar to conduct the election.
He noted that Benue SWAN will rally round one of their own to deliver on the task of delivering acceptable results after the exercise.
