March 25, (THEWILL) — Biogas production has been identified as a practical and sustainable pathway to address Nigeria’s persistent energy challenges, with Dr Moses Fajobi emphasising that adequate energy supply is fundamental to national development.
In a recent statement, Fajobi stressed that Nigeria must embrace biogas technology to stimulate growth across critical sectors, warning that the country’s current energy mix is inadequate for meaningful progress.
“Energy remains a critical factor for economic growth, and Nigeria’s current energy mix is insufficient to propel development, as many parts of the nation still lack access to reliable power”, he stated.
According to him, the nation’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels is increasingly unsustainable due to resource depletion and environmental risks. He argued that diversifying into renewable sources like biogas would not only improve energy access but also enhance environmental sustainability.
Fajobi explained that biogas is produced from readily available biomass, including cow dung, food waste, agricultural residues, and municipal solid waste resources, which are abundant across Nigeria but largely underutilised.
He noted that harnessing these materials for energy production could significantly reduce waste, create jobs, and provide a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
The expert maintained that adopting biogas technology at scale would strengthen Nigeria’s energy security, support rural electrification, and drive inclusive economic development.
