BEVERLY HILLS, January 16, (THEWILL) – In what appears to be a first major onslaught on the University of Maiduguri, UNIMAID, since the start of Boko Haram insurgency, many people were in the early hours of Monday feared dead after twin bomb explosions rocked the university.
Eyewitnesses say the first explosion occured within the staff quarters of the university in the Borno state capital during early morning while some students and staff were observing prayer at 6:30 am.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Victor Isuku, confirmed the explosions but could not provide details. Witnesses said the mosque was completely destroyed.
The second attack was said to have happened near the university’s fifth gate usually used by pedestrians.
Isuku stated that the commissioner of police has already mobilised his officials to the university campus.
Some senior staffers and many other persons are said to have either been killed or badly injured.
However, it was gathered that soldiers have since taken over both scenes of the bomb attacks.
Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, also confirmed the incidents, disclosing that the twin blasts at the University of Maiduguri occurred at about 5am on Monday.
The NEMA spokesperson, Sani Datti, said, “one of the suicide bombers detonated his explosion at a Mosque near gate 1 when people were observing their early morning prayer, the second one occurred around gate 5 of the University”.
