December 10, (THEWILL) – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil underwent surgery on Monday night to drain an intracranial hemorrhage.
A statement by the Sírio-Libanês Hospital said President Lula sought medical attention at the Sírio-Libanês Hospital in Brasília for imaging tests after reporting headaches.
“The MRI then indicated an intracranial hemorrhage resulting from the domestic accident suffered by the president in October of this year. Lula was transferred that night to the Sírio-Libanês unit in São Paulo,” it said.
A second medical bulletin was issued early Tuesday, the procedure went without complications, and the 79-year-old head of state is recovering well in the Intensive Care Unit.
During a press conference on Tuesday, doctors said Lula did not suffer any brain injuries.
He is “conscious and stable, and is talking normally,” they added.
The medical team also stressed that Lula will not have any lasting effects from the procedure, and his return to Brasília is expected at the beginning of next week.
