October 24, (THEWILL) — In a major shake-up of Nigeria’s security leadership, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of new Service Chiefs to head the nation’s Armed Forces.
The development comes just days after reports of an alleged coup attempt, which both the Presidency and the military have since dismissed.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, the appointments are part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen the country’s security architecture and enhance inter-agency coordination.
Under the new structure, General Olufemi Oluyede has been named Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa.
Major General W. Shaibu takes over as Chief of Army Staff, while Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke becomes Chief of Air Staff. Rear Admiral I. Abbas assumes the role of Chief of Naval Staff.
The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retains his position.
President Tinubu, who serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expressed appreciation to the outgoing Service Chiefs for their “patriotic service and dedicated leadership,” commending their efforts in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and stability.
He charged the new military leaders to justify the confidence reposed in them by exhibiting professionalism, vigilance, and unity in tackling Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
“The President charges the newly appointed Service Chiefs to further enhance the professionalism, vigilance, and comradeship that define the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” the statement read in part.
The Presidency added that the appointments take immediate effect.
