March 21, (THEWILL) — Robert Mueller, a former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Special Counsel who investigated allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 United States presidential election and the role of Donald Trump and his campaign, has died at the age of 81, according to reports quoting family sources.
The reports indicated that the cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
Mueller, a respected figure in American law enforcement, served as FBI Director from 2001 to 2013, taking office shortly before the September 11 attacks.
His tenure was marked by significant reforms that repositioned the bureau to focus more on counterterrorism and national security.
In 2017, he was appointed Special Counsel by then-Deputy Attorney General, Rod Rosenstein, to lead an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 United States presidential election.
The probe, which lasted nearly two years, resulted in multiple indictments and convictions involving Russian operatives and several Trump associates.
While the investigation did not establish a criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia, it detailed extensive efforts to influence the election and examined possible obstruction of justice.
A decorated Vietnam War veteran, Mueller built a reputation for discipline and integrity throughout his career.
He also served as a federal prosecutor and headed the Justice Department’s criminal division, handling major organised crime and terrorism cases.
He is survived by his wife, Ann, and their two daughters.
