March 18, (THEWILL) — Israel has announced the killing of Iran’s Intelligence Minister, Esmail Khatib, in an overnight airstrike, marking a significant escalation in hostilities between the two regional rivals.
The Israeli Defence Minister, Israel Katz, said Khatib was “eliminated” in the strike, signalling an expansion of Israel’s campaign targeting Iran’s top security leadership.
Initial reports of the assassination were met with uncertainty, but Iranian state media on Wednesday confirmed that Khatib was killed in what it described as an Israeli-led operation.
Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, also acknowledged the development, expressing deep sorrow over the loss. In a statement posted on X, he described the incident as a “cowardly assassination” that has plunged the country into mourning.
Khatib’s death comes amid a wave of targeted killings of senior Iranian officials. Among those reportedly killed in recent strikes are Ali Larijani and Basij commander, Aziz Nasirzadeh, in what appears to be a coordinated effort to dismantle Iran’s security leadership.
Appointed in 2021, Khatib was widely regarded as one of the most powerful figures within Iran’s intelligence architecture, overseeing both domestic surveillance operations and foreign intelligence activities.
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) alleged that Khatib played a central role in suppressing internal dissent, including overseeing crackdowns during the Mahsa Amini protests, as well as directing operations targeting Israeli and American interests abroad.
The latest developments underscore a rapidly intensifying conflict, with Israel increasingly targeting high-ranking Iranian figures, while Tehran has responded with missile and drone strikes on Israeli territory and across the wider region.
Tensions remain high, with fears of further escalation as Iran signals the possibility of retaliation.
