April 21, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu has approved a minor cabinet reshuffle within the Federal Executive Council (FEC), affecting changes in the nation’s economic and housing leadership as part of efforts to strengthen governance and improve service delivery.
The development was conveyed in an official memo signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, on Tuesday.
A statement signed by Bayo Odunuga, Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, disclosed that Wale Edun has been relieved of his position as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy.
He is to hand over to Taiwo Oyedele, who has now been elevated to assume the role.
Oyedele, who previously served as Minister of State for Finance, is expected to bring continuity and renewed drive to Nigeria’s economic management at a critical time for fiscal reforms and macroeconomic stability.
In a related development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa will also exit the cabinet as Minister of Housing and Urban Development.
He has been directed to hand over to the Minister of State in the ministry pending the confirmation of Mr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma, who has been named ministerial nominee and Minister-designate for the Housing and Urban Development Ministry.
The memo stipulated that all handover processes must be concluded on or before the close of business on Thursday, April 23, 2026, to ensure a seamless transition.
Explaining the rationale behind the reshuffle, Akume said the changes are part of deliberate efforts by the Tinubu administration to reposition the cabinet for optimal performance.
“These changes are aimed at strengthening cohesion, synergy in governance as well as achieving more impactful delivery on the economy to Nigerians, through the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he stated.
He further noted that the President exercised his constitutional powers under Sections 147 and 148 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) in approving the reshuffle.
President Tinubu also commended the outgoing ministers for their service to the nation and wished them success in their future endeavours, underscoring the administration’s appreciation for their contributions.
The SGF added that the President has reassured cabinet members that the process of reinvigoration within the government will be continuous, indicating that further adjustments may be made as necessary to sustain performance and accountability.
The reshuffle, though described as minor, signals a strategic recalibration of key sectors, particularly the economy and housing, which remain central to the administration’s development priorities.
Analysts say the elevation of Oyedele reflects a preference for technocratic leadership, while the introduction of new leadership in the housing ministry is expected to inject fresh ideas into urban development and housing delivery.
