June 08, (THEWILL) – A former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has emerged the Presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 general elections.
Tinubu clinched the much coveted ticket during the presidential primary of the APC, held on Tuesday night, at Eagles Square, Abuja.
A total of 2,322 Delegates, three from each of the 774 local governments, voted to determine the fate of Bola Tinubu, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan and 10 Others.
While former Minister of Education, Prof. Chukwuemeka Nwajuba, had astained from the party’s convention, nine of the 23 presidential aspirants, had earlier withdrawn from the race.
Among the aspirants who announced withdrawal from the primary election were Mrs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, Dr Felix Nicholas, former Governor, Godswill Akpabio, former Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, former Speaker, Dimeji Bankole, Sen. Ajayi Boroffice, Gov. Muhammad Badaru, Sen. Ken Nnamani and Gov. Kayode Fayemi.
The 13 aspirants who contested the presidential primary are, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Ahmed Rufai, Sen. Rochas Okorocha, Jack Rich, Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, Ebonyi State governor, David Umuahi, Bola Tinubu, Sen. Ahmed Yarima, Dr Ahmad Lawan, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Rotimi Amaechi, Governor, Yahaya Bello and Ogbonnaya Onu.
Declaring the results of the exercise on Wednesday, Chairman of the Election Committee of the Convention and the Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Bagudu, declared Sen. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, winner of the APC Presidential Primary.
Tinubu polled 1,271 votes to beat 12 other contestants to clinch the presidential ticket.
While Rotimi Amaechi, came second with 316 votes, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo secured 235 votes to come third and Senate President, Ahmad Lawan scored 152 votes.
