August 25, (THEWILL) – Gunmen suspected to be bandits have attacked the Yelwa Zangam Community, behind the University of Jos (UNIJOS) permanent site, killing 35 people with several others wounded.

THEWILL gathered that for the past two days there was tension within the community following the destruction of a local bridge linking the community with other neighbourhoods in Jos North LGA.

The Transition Committee Chairman of Jos North, Alhaji Shehu Bala Usman, was at the affected community on Tuesday to douse tension over the destruction of the local bridge by unknown persons on Monday night.

Eyewitnesses told newsmen on Wednesday morning that the armed gunmen, suspected to have destroyed the community bridge on Monday night, invaded at about 9pm on Tuesday night Killing, burning houses and shooting anyone in sight.

The attackers, who disabled the bridge leading to the Anaguta community, prevented any help to the besieged Anaguta community from other neighbours as they carried out their onslaught against the helpless victims.

A resident, Yakubu, who confirmed the fresh attack to reporters on Wednesday morning, said several families were burnt alive in their homes, while others who sustained serious injuries were taken to Plateau Specialist Hospital for Emergency treatment.

He said over 30 people were killed and security personnel had been drafted to the area.

The attack occurred barely one week after over 25 travellers were killed in Gada Biyu – Rukuba road in Jos North LGA.

When contacted, the Plateau State Police Command, Ubah Ogaba, confirmed the incident and promised to give details later.
